Postmodern Barbarians

Not all the barbarians live in some middle eastern desert. Nor are all of them members of murderous street gangs. There is a professional class of barbarians in our midst. They are medical doctors who earn their living by performing partial birth abortions. For readers unacquainted with the gruesome practice the third trimester living baby is allowed to partially emerge from its mother's body, but before the birth process is completed the doctor kills the baby in a way that would shock the average layman to tears. Assisting these medical barbarians are numerous other professional types. There are the Federal Appeals Court judges of the 2nd and 9th districts who recently struck down laws that outlawed partial birth abortion. There are those liberal politicians who have consistently opposed every effort to ban this horrible procedure. There are those feminists and pro-abortion groups, made up primarily of professionals, who have devoted their lives and energy to keeping every conceivable abortion procedure legal for the entire nine months of pregnancy.

The ancient Romans thought of themselves as the pinnacle of refined and humane civilization while practicing infanticide and enjoying the gladiatorial games where men fought to the death of one of the contestants. So the liberals of the pro-abortion camp tend to think of themselves as the top of the social and intellectual pyramid. They display their degrees from prestigious universities and sip the finest wines at the best restaurants while promoting and defending this barbaric practice. To be truly civilized demands more than high educational attainments, affluence and arrogant pride. These without a humane spirit, a commitment to treat ones neighbor as you want to be treated, and a zeal to protect the weak and unfortunate are wearing a mask that hides the barbarous spirit within.
