I Are Traditional Marriage and Family Worth Defending?
Dear Editor:
Gays are putting a full-court press on American society and the game is definitely going their way. They foundations of traditional heterosexual marriage are profoundly weakened and society's family superstructure is teetering.
Given the eagerness of the courts, liberal politicians and the media to grant the marriage demands of the gay community we can reasonably expect other with alternative lifestyles to get on the bandwagon.
- Those who prefer group marriage. They can cite examples from nature.
- Those whose preference is polygamy or polyandry. They can point to ancient civilizations and modern Africa and their religious beliefs.
- Those who desire to marry close relatives. The Hawaiians formerly allowed this type of marriage as did the royalty of many nations such as Egypt.
- Those who crave the liberty to form liaisons with minors. The North American Men-Boys Love Association is pushing this. Ancient civilizations such as Greece and Rome allowed such unions.
If the marriage of men to men and women to women is legalized on what basis can society and courts refuse to grant these other alternative life-style groups their demands? If they should grant the one and deny the others it would clearly be discriminatory. God-forbid that any court or politician be accused of this cardinal sin. Under the modern rules of the contest no appeal can be made to Scripture, morality, traditional values or what is best for society and nation. Personal liberty to do what one wishes trumps all of these formerly valid reasons.
It is time for Americans to ask if there is any merit or value in maintaining and strengthening the traditional family with a husband, a wife and children? If so, every citizen should devote himself to that task. If not, then in fairness dissolve all legal restraints of marriage and allow the primal urges of homo-erectus have their way.
