Some Thing are Hard for the Blind to See
Dear Editor:
Civil rights activists constantly cite the large number of young Black men who are in the criminal justice system as proof of discrimination against Blacks by the White majority population. This is even cited as one reason why Blacks should receive reparation payments.
As I was weighing their claims, the following related questions came to my mind:
- Why are there more men than women in our prison system?
- Why are there more young men than old men in our prison system?
- Why do more unemployed people run afoul of the law than employed people?
- Why are there more healthy people in prison than those with physical handicaps?
- Why are there more teenagers than infants in the juvenile justice system?
- Why do more criminals get arrested and do time than law-abiding citizens?
Perhaps when the sociologists and the civil-rights activists figure out the answers to these questions they will be able to understand why more young Blacks are in the prison system than other population groups.
Scripture says, "Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap" (Gal. 6:7). An urban proverb says, "If you do the crime, you serve the time."
Some folks have good eyes but they cannot see reality because their eyes they have closed (Matt. 13:15).
