Respect and Care for Human Life Being Lost
Dear Editor:
Chante Mallard of Ft. Worth was high on alcohol and Ecstasy when her car struck Gregory Biggs, a homeless drifter. The victim of her drunken driving was thrown headfirst into her windshield. There his broken and bleeding body was wedged. Rather than face the possibility of arrest and prosecution for her crime, Mallard drove home with her victim still impaled in her windshield and hid her car in her garage. Poor Biggs begged for help and mercy but she totally ignored him and left him to die a slow and torturous death. As would be expected her lawyer is trying to mitigate the brutality of her case by saying it was just "a case of failure to stop and render aid."
This bizarre case is a glaring reminder of the fact that we now have in our society an element of people who have absolutely no respect for human life and no evidence of human kindness or sympathy toward their fellow man.
- Gangs of young thugs who ruthlessly kill without remorse dominate the streets of our large cities. In their shootouts innocent victims are killed without remorse. Such stories are posted in the newspapers daily. So common are they that most don't even warrant a headline.
- Hit and run driving is a daily occurrence here in our region. Such criminals can drive away leaving their victims to welter in their blood and die unattended. Avoiding arrest and responsibility for their recklessness is deemed more important than another person's life.
- The endless series of cases of children battered and killed by their parents or guardians is a glaring example of this social disease.
- The determined battle of the abortion industry and its supporters to keep late-term, partial birth abortions legal reflects another element of our society who value their right to abortion at any stage of pregnancy far above the life of a full-term child that could easily live outside the womb.
- There are daily reports of murders, some committed by people of prominence. When the perpetrators are discovered they are often able to escape punishment with the assistance of shrewd lawyers and a sympathy campaign orchestrated by professional spin-miesters.
- The slaughter of multitudes by groups such as the Islamic terrorists who purposely kill innocent civilians; women, children. Not only do they kill without compunction of conscience they celebrate with glee and joy when they succeed.
Human society cannot long survive where human life is not respected. When a people lose the moral strength necessary to defeat and control the violent ones among them they are doomed.
When misguided sympathy and tolerance finds or accepts excuses for the killing of innocent life, a civilization will soon collapse. Respect for human life must be taught and demonstrated. Homes schools and churches share this responsibility. The most fundamental purpose of government and law is to protect the lives of its law-abiding citizens and to restrain the lawless element that is unwilling to respect the law and the rights of others.
Unfortunately we see massive failure in all of these areas of our society and the consequences are before us in the slaughter of innocent life.
