The Role Of God And The Bible In America's History

I have always been a lover of history. The following historical quotes help us understand the thinking of our national leaders prior to this current generation.

George Washington wrote, "It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible. It is impossible to account for the creation of the universe, without th agency of a Supreme Being. It is impossible to govern the universe without the aid of a Supreme Being" (Washington's Private Journal)

Thomas Jefferson wrote, "God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever" (From his 1785 Notes on th State of Virginia).

Abraham Lincoln wrote, "...yet we cannot but believe that He who made the world still governs it" (to Eliza Gurney,1862). Again he said, "...I know that the Lord is always on the side of the right. But it is my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this nation should be on the Lord's side." (Spoken at a White House dinner). In his second Inaugural Address he said, "...with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in...to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves, and with all nations."

Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas wrote, "We are a religious people and our institutions presuppose a Supreme Being...When the state encourages religious instruction or cooperates with religious authorities by adjusting the schedule of public events to sectarian needs, it follows the best of our traditions. We cannot read into the Bill of Rights a philosophy of hostility to religion."

Secularists ignore and deny these and hundreds of similar facts as they seek to rid America of its religious heritage. Each victory they win further impoverishes our nation.
