Citizenship a Blessing And a Responsibility

Dear Editor:

In just a few days our primary election will be held. Then in November we will have our general election. God has blessed us by giving us a form of government that allows us to chose our own leaders. In the long history of humanity this has been the exception rather than the rule. Good people have struggled, fought and died to gain for us this right and more did the same to preserve it for us.

The upcoming election is crucial to the safety, welfare and future of our nation. Christian citizens are in good position to help select our nation’s leaders. We have a true and wholesome standard by which to measure those who solicit our votes. Those who spend much time studying God’s Word develop moral clarity by which to discern not only between good and evil, but also between good, better and best and poor, bad and evil. It is essential that we use that divine standard in deciding for whom we will cast our ballot.

Christians need to look beyond “party labels” and assess the candidate’s personal qualities such as religious commitment, honesty, integrity, decency, and patriotism. They also need to make themselves aware of the moral implications of the issues involved.

Paul teaches us to pray for our rulers (I Tim. 2:1-3). We should also do lots of praying before we cast our ballot. Good citizenship is a Christian privilege as well as a duty.
