Baffling Attitudes of Liberals About Combating Terrorists
Dear Editor:
In the wake of the Sept. 11 attack, president Bush pledged that he would lead us in a victorious war against terrorism. Congress, with one shameful exception, pledged their loyal support to help him achieve that goal.
Liberals did well for the first month, but when the President and the Attorney General got down to the details of ferreting out the terrorists and setting up a mechanism for administering justice to those responsible for terrorist attacks, their patriotic starch wilted.
- They are outraged that federal authorities are holding Middle-Easterners, suspected of ties to terrorists.
- They don't want those 5,000 young men among us, of Middle-eastern origins, to even be questioned on a voluntary basis.
- Under no circumstances do they want the Justice Department authorized to keep tabs on Islamic clerics, mosques and charities, even though we are certain that some of them have been involved in assisting the terrorists.
- They are aghast that terrorists soldiers who infiltrated our land to do us harm should be tried before military tribunals.
Just as they successfully hobbled law enforcement for the last 40 years, these "a-patriotic" souls would limit the arsenal of weapons available to our leaders and especially our security forces.
Fortunately, polls show 86 percent of the population agrees of President Bush's handling of the situation while only 4 percent share the views of the liberal naysayers.
Should these lost souls have their misguided way, I can see them lying in the ruins of another bombed out building with smiles frozen on their cold faces, knowing that at least they protected the "civil liberties" of the Islamic terrorists who have vowed to destroy us.
