Death of Our Nation
Dear Editor:
The headline reads, "Modern World Could Follow Fallen Empires. "Historians and archaeologists who study the downfall of ancient civilizations are warning that parts of the modern world may be heading for the way of history's fallen empires." The author, from the Knight-Ridder Newspapers, cites Christopher Scarre of Cambridge University who warns that high population concentrations make societies vulnerable to environmental change and over exploitation of the land.
In reading Edward Gibbons The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire I noted other significant reasons for the fall of that great nation:
- The decay and collapse of the family.
- Drastic decline in their national birth rate.
- Obsession with violent and degrading sports and entertainment.
- Collapse of the moral standards of society.
- An enormous national debt with unreasonably heavy taxation.
- Dependence on foreigners to produce their food and goods, run their businesses and fill the ranks of their military.
- Years of unresolved internal strife and conflict.
Overcrowding, the production of food and the acquisition of adequate fresh water are issues modern technology can deal with. But the seven items listed above, which America is now burdened with, technology cannot resolve. Only by a national awakening and return to our spiritual and cultural roots can we hope to survive.
