A Debt We Owe
Not long ago we were having a yard sale. Among the items for sale was a faded old US flag with 48 stars. An elderly man with one arm and a badly scarred face happened by and claimed the flag. I observed to him, "That was the one you served under?" He responded positively. I then asked where he served and he mentioned the South Pacific islands. I saluted him and thanked him for the service he had rendered on our behalf. I said, "I take it you lost you arm there?" He responded, "Yes, but I am one of the lucky ones. Most of my buddies never made it off the beach." My eyes brimmed with tears, even as they do now. I felt I stood in the presence of a noble man who deserved my profoundest respect and gratitude.
No less is the respect and gratitude we owe to those Americans now serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. May we never say or do anything that will in any way hinder their efforts or increase the burdens they bear. Let us hold up their hands, and give them our unfaltering support. Let not a day pass without mention of them in our prayers.
