Astrology: God's View

Many are tempted to consult astrologers to learn what their future holds. "Astrology is the belief in the occult influence of heavenly bodies on human affairs and the practice or technique of divining events from astronomical observances" (Americana Vol. 2, p. 557, 1969). Can we participate in this practice and still please God? God has spoken on this subject in his holy Word.

Astrology is seeking for secret knowledge. "The secret things belong unto...our God, but the things that are revealed belong unto us..." (Deut. 29:29). God has reserved knowledge of the future for himself. "It is not for you to know the times and seasons which the Father hath set within His own authority" (Acts 1:7).

The origin of astrology is in idolatry. God warned against serving other gods and worshiping them, including the sun, the moon or any of "the hosts of heaven." Such practices He called abominations (Deut. 17:2-4). Under the Mosaic law it was punishable by death.

Astrology is forbidden as an heathenish practice. "Thus saith Jehovah, learn not the way of the heathen and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven for the heathen are dismayed at them" (Jer. 10:2 KJV).

Belief in astrology is futile. "I am Jehovah that...stretcheth forth the heavens above...that frustrateth the signs of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward and maketh their knowledge foolish" (Is.
44:24-25).

Astrology is worthless. God challenged the Hebrews, "let now the astrologers, the star gazers, the monthly prognosticators stand up, and save thee from the things that shall come upon thee. Behold they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves" (Is. 47:13-14).

The Scripture give us "all things that pertain to life and godliness" (II Pet. 1:3). Any spiritual information you need is found therein. By prayer we can ask for God's help. Astrologers can only offer bogus information and worthless hope. God expect us to abstain from the appearance of evil, including astrology (I Thess. 5:22).
