Resisting Secularism's War Against Christianity
Led by the American Civil Liberties Union, secularists of all stripes have declared open warfare on Christianity. This year has seen a concerted effort to drive Christians and their religion from public recognition in our national life. Currently this is seen in the many lawsuits and edicts to eliminate Christian expressions from public holiday activities. Secularists who have quietly gained positions of power in schools and city councils have been proactive, issuing rules forbidding such things as nativity scenes, Christmas carols, Christmas greetings and even banning the word “Christmas.” Perhaps it is a spiteful reaction to the successful influence of the “Christian” community in the recent national elections.
If we wish our society and culture to be secularized like those in Marxist societies Christian citizens will wring their hands and do nothing. On the other hand we need stand helpless in the face is these assaults on their faith.
- We can refuse to patronize businesses that put themselves in the anti-Christian camp. Those who despise Christianity should not receive a penny of my shopping money!
- We can display the symbols of our faith, without embarrassment or reservation. Utilize bumper stickers, personal jewelry, signs and yard displays, and every other legal avenue to let the world know on whose side you stand.
- We can refuse to participate in their “de Christianized” winter programs.
- We can express our outrage toward the secularists and their hateful efforts. Speak up to the school officials who seek to ban mention of our faith. Write letters to the editors of your papers.
- We can speak up and point out the bigotry of those who seek to ban the public expression of our faith, be they atheists or members of other world religions.
- We can implant our faith in our children so they will recognize the bankruptcy of the secularists and reject their message.
- We can share our faith with our neighbors and those in our circle of contacts.
- We can take time to read and inform ourselves about our Christian faith so that we can discuss it intelligently and speak up in its behalf.
- We can learn the truth about the significant role Christianity played in the founding and development of our nation so we can dispute the false propaganda of the secularists.
- We can grasp every opportunity to speak up and urge our elected officials to protect our nation’s traditional values, many of which are based on our faith. Write letters, make phone calls, send emails.
- When casting our votes we can remember every man or woman who has lent support to the anti-Christian efforts of the secularists. They should be rejected forthright!
- We can refuse to be intimidated by those who hate the faith we hold sacred.
- We can let the light of Christ so shine in our daily lives that even the most hardened secularists will be forced to acknowledge the beneficial influence his religion (Matt. 5:16).
- We can show kindness to those who have declared themselves the enemies of our faith and by so doing heap coals of fire on their heads (Rom. 12:20).
It was not secularism that motivated those who laid the foundation of our nation. Those who hold that view should not be allowed to deny Christians their rightful place in the life of the nation.
