If Atheism Prevailed...
Our neighbor, Mr. Dennis McGarry writes in the Daily News Sun that he believes that "God is a hoax!" He is convinced that religion is bad and that pursuing religion is wasted effort. I wonder if he has any proof or evidence for his assertions? Just how much research has he done on the subject? Where are his credentials that we should take him seriously? Since Christianity is the predominate religion in our nation, consider the consequences if Mr. McGarry had his way. If today all aspects and vestiges of Christianity were removed from our world, think what we would have:
- Instantly thousands of hospitals operated by followers of Jesus would be shut down.
- Thousands of schools, homes for homeless children, unwed mothers, senior citizens the homeless would be closed, as would Christian adoption agencies, rescue shelters and day care centers.
- Millions of poor people who turn to churches for assistance would have to look elsewhere.
- The greatest art of the ages, being based on Christian themes, would have to be destroyed. Also much of the greatest music and literature could not survive since their themes are thoroughly biblical.
- Some of the grandest architecture in the world would have to be eliminated since church buildings would have no place in his world.
- Our maps would be instantly obsolete as every city named for some Christian saint would have to be renamed. There would be no San Francisco, St. Paul, St Petersburg, St. Thomas or St. John.
- Our calendar would have to be replaced. There could be no B.C. (Before Christ) nor A.D. (The year of our Lord). Christmas, Good Friday, Easter and Thanksgiving would have to be purged.
- Many of our great universities would have to close because they were founded by believers in Christ for the purpose of serving his church. Even schools like Harvard, Yale and Princeton had Christian origins.
- Our judicial system would have to be redesigned. No longer would we have a basic moral code that finds its roots in the ten commandments. Witnesses could not be asked to swear on the Bible.
- Our nation's founding documents would have to be discarded and new ones issued that made no mention of God who endowed all men with unalienable rights.
- Our money would have to be replaced since it all carries the imprint "In God we trust." Our pledge of allegiance would have to be rewritten, and our nations' motto would have to be scuttled.
- Our national history would have to be revised to eliminate all the references to the Pilgrims and Quakers, Moravians, Dissenters and Non-conformists, and Catholics who came here seeking freedom to worship God as they thought best.
- Our culture and value system would have to be destroyed and reconstituted since it's foundation and origin is in the Judeo-Christian religion.
Other societies have tried to live without the influence of Christianity. France tried for a short period in 1793-94. That period is called the Reign of Terror. Communist Russia tried it for 70 years. Today Communism is dead and Christianity is reviving all over that land. China, Albania and Cuba are still working on that basis. They make a good case study of societies without the influence of God and Christianity. For my part, I will stick with what we have. True, some religious institutions and individuals fail to live up to God's standard, but over all it is the best thing that has ever happened to the human race.
