Hare Krishna's Have a New God

Dear Editor:

Our Hare Krishna Hindu neighbors of Chandler are installing a new deity in their temple. "A 2 1/2 foot statue of Sri Nathji... will be installed on the altar." Mr. P. Narayan, coordinator of the event, explained that, "With deity installation, you chant mantras and you induce life in the idol...it becomes Krishna himself, personified..."

Now since we live in a land of religious liberty we Christians make no effort to interfere with our Hare Krishna neighbors installing and giving life to their new idol. We also live in the new age of pluralism and multi-culturalism which means the media and establishment folks love to feature such unusual events as the service of empowering a statue of a Hindu god with life.

My problem is why do the same media and intellectual elites not show the same understanding and sympathy to "Christian" groups who have strange and unusual practices? For example:
  • Why do they ridicule those followers of the various Pentecostal faiths with their emotional services and claims of miracles?
  • Why do they hold in such contempt, conservative, evangelical disciples who believe human life begins at conception or sexual relations between same-sex partners is wrong, or that the Bible is really and actually God's message to man?
Surely these views, so despised and denigrated by our intellectuals and media, are no more extreme than breathing life into an idol made by a craftsman.

Are we to conclude that the tolerance and sympathy of pluralism is reserved only for non-Christian expressions of religion?
