Is Witchcraft A Reality?
Dear Mr. Waddey:
Some people deny witchcraft. If it is not real why is it
condemned in the Bible?
-Samuel
Dear Samuel:
That the practice of witchcraft is a reality, we cannot deny. What we
deny is that the practitioner of witchcraft has any supernatural
power. The witch or witch doctor manipulates his follower or
his victim with lies, deception and fear.
Here in America we have professional "magicians." These are
entertainers who have learned all sorts of tricks that appear to be
impossible feats. These magicians do not make any claim to supernatural
power. They have mastered the art of illusion and
distraction. While you are looking in one direction, they do
their trick in another location. They have an old saying "The
hand is faster than the eye." Should an ignorant or
superstitious person see the magician at work he would think he had
wrought a miracle. Magicians go to schools to learn their
craft. They read books that explain how to fool people.
Witch doctors do the same. Our Christian workers in Africa
have converted a number of witch doctors to Christ. They
explained how they learned their methods. The fear factor is one of the
most potent of their tools. Since witchery involves the
worship of evil spirits, those who practice it think nothing of using
secretive means to harm those on whom they place a
curse. They can slip poison in ones food or
water. They can slip a poisonous spider, a scorpion or snake
into ones bed. They can inject a sleeping person with
poison. When one person whom they have cursed or
placed the hex upon grows desperately ill or dies, it strikes fear in
all around them. If a curse is laid upon a man who does not
understand these things. He greatly fears the witch doctor's
malevolent power. He is afraid to eat or drink lest he be
poisoned. He cannot sleep because he fears he may be harmed
while sleeping. In just a few days his body gives way to fear
and starvation and sickness overcome him. In time he might
even die. If he will pay the witch doctor, the curse will be lifted and
he feels free to eat, drink and rest. Therefore he gets well.
God did condemn witchcraft (Deut. 18:10). He still does so
(Gal. 5:20). There it is called sorcery.
Practitioners of witchcraft traffic is lies and devilish
religion. They harm people. As education and understand
increase, ignorance and fear subside and the witch loses his or her
power over their neighbors. In most developed nations they
are looked upon as deceived deceivers. Intelligent people
laugh at them.
Sincerely,
