Are Peacemakers 'Sons of God'?

Dear Bro. John:
In Matthew 5:9 we read that the peacemakers will be called "sons of God". Does this mean the peacemaker will automatically be saved?
-Jerry

Dear Jerry:
When we behave as peace makers as we live our lives here on earth, those about us will recognize that attribute and conclude that we are truly sons of God. J. B. Phillips in his New Testament in Modern English captures this idea. "Happy are those who make peace, for they shall be known as sons of God." Every Christian is a son or daughter of God. "For ye are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of your as were baptized into Christ did put on Christ" (Gal. 3:26-27). This passage makes it clear that faith and baptism are essential in making us children of God (Mark 16:16). We know that just being peacemakers would not do that. Thus we conclude that the verse in Matthew does not speak of becoming a Christian, but being recognized as such by those about us.

Sincerely,
