Can We Worship On Days Other Than Sunday?
Dear Bro. Waddey:
We are having a lively discussion in our congregation on the day of
worship. Some say we can worship on any day and others that we can only
worship on Sunday. Can you help us find a bible solution to
this matter?
-Stephanos
Dear Bro. Stephanos:
Christians can worship God on any day of the week, whether privately in
their home or corporately with their congregation. Most
congregations have occasional revivals, workshop or seminars that
extend throughout several days of the week. In these sessions
they can worship God in spirit and in truth by doing the things he has
instructed them to do (Matt. 28:20).
On the other hand we can participate in the Lord's Supper only on the
first day of the week. This is the day on which the early
Christians communed (Acts 20:7). The first day (our Sunday) is special
for several reasons. On that day Jesus was resurrected (John 20:1). On
that day he repeatedly appeared to his disciples following his
resurrection (John 20:19; 20:26). The church had her beginning on the
day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-47). The Feast of Pentecost always was
observed on a first day of the week (Lev. 23:15-21). The practice of
the early Christians was to always assemble for worship on the first
day (I Cor. 16:1-2). We are instructed to hold the
pattern of sound words (II Tim. 1:13).
Thus every day is a good day to worship the Lord. But worship involving
the observance of the Lord's Supper must be limited to the first day of
the week, Sunday. On any and all other days we can worship with songs,
prayers, teaching and exhortation. But to be loyal to Christ
we will always assemble for worship with communion on the first day,
the day that Christ arose from the dead.
Sincerely,
