How Often Should We Observe Communion?

Dear Mr. Waddey:
My family and I are trying to worship God as the Bible directs. We are not sure as to how often we should commune. Does the Bible discuss this?

Dear NF:
When Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper he said "This do, as often as ye drink it, in remembrance of me..." (I Corinthians 11:25). The records of early church history demonstrate that the primitive church communed weekly. "It is well-known that the primitive Christians administered the Eucharist every Lord's Day" (Philip Doddridge). In Acts 20:7 we read, "Upon the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread...." This shows that the primary purpose for their weekly assembly was to break the bread of communion. Because of the trials and temptations we daily face, it is important that once each week, we pause to remember how much Christ suffered for us so we might be saved. Be like those first Christians and break the bread on the first day of every week.
