Does God Exist?
Dear Teacher:
Since childhood I have been bombarded with teaching that ridicules the idea of God. How can I know that God really exists?
- Jorge
Dear Jorge:
Christians are confident God exists! Our faith is based on solid reasons. Consider the following:
"The heavens declare the glory of God and the earth showeth his handiwork" (Psalm 19:1). The creation demands a creator. Machines don't just happen, nor did our universe. Since no man or group of men could create it, a being wiser and mightier than mankind did so. That being is God.
- Your personal existence demands a Supreme Being.
Trace your genealogy back to the first man. Scripture calls him Adam. Who were his parents? Moses tells us God made man in his image, and likeness (Genesis 1:26). Our intelligence, moral sense and religious impulse came not from primeval soup, protozoa, or apes. These human characteristics came from God our creator.
- The existence of moral law demands a lawgiver.
Every human heart has a sense of "ought and ought not." Every tribe of people has a moral code by which they live. Where did such codes originate? Not with chimps! They originated with a moral God. Even those who reject God's law, complain when they are mistreated. Why?
- Design implies a designer.
"Every house is built by someone" (Hebrews 3:4). All things of our cosmos reflect intricate design. Look at yourself: your eyes, your hearing, your heart, and your hand. You are an example of brilliant design and so is every aspect of our world. If you found a hidden cave and deep inside you found an arrowhead, you would know intelligent life had been there before hand. So when you observe a beetle or a man, you can be sure an intelligent designer made them. That designer is God.
- Works of art demand an artist.
You would not ask how a lovely painting evolved? Or what accident produced it? The beauty in the created world implies a creative artist was at work. That artist is God.
God lives and reigns. All will stand before him and give account for their lives (Romans 14:10). "Without faith it is impossible to be well-pleasing unto God (Hebrews 11:6). If you believe in God, then determine to serve him through Jesus.
